I've loved jewellery since my childhood. In some ways, this made my parents' life quite easy, I think. They never had to think too hard about what to give me for my birthday. Any cheap trinket would make me ecstatic. And later, when doctors discovered that my eyesight was bad and I needed glasses, showing me some pretty frames with shiny stones was an easy way to make me wear them! I still think of glasses as the best jewellery on my face!

Have you ever done pottery? It's my favourite hobby  — making pots and vases out of clay. This is such an old craft! You can find ancient Greek amphoras in almost any museum! Recently, though, I've started working with polymer clay on smaller things  — especially earrings. It takes longer, and you also need to paint them afterwards, but the result is so pretty! My wife and two daughters love wearing them, which really inspires me!

When I was a little girl, my grandmother once showed me one of her jewellery boxes. Inside it she kept all the jewellery that was passed down to her by her grandmother  — our family heirlooms, if you like! Some of those things were beautiful, others quite ordinary, but still very old. I was fascinated. That sparked my interest in history. And look at me now! I'm a university professor of history! And my dissertation was about Tudor-period jewellery in Britain!

I'm a successful businessman, and I believe jewellery is an important marker of status. When I attend a business meeting, I always wear my college signet ring, my wedding ring and an expensive watch. In my line of work, people pay attention to such things. In a way, it's a guarantee of my professionalism, my success and my integrity. I've noticed that contracts get signed much faster if I wear expensive clothes and noticeable jewellery.

When I was younger, I thought that the best kind of jewellery was expensive jewellery  — gold, silver, with precious stones like diamonds, you know, that kind of thing. But over time, I've noticed that I look much better in jewellery that I buy at craft markets, made from cheap materials by talented artists. So, I have completely switched to those! They reflect my character more.

I hate jewellery of any kind. Don't get me wrong  — I like it on other people, I just hate wearing it myself. Take my hobbies, for instance. I love gardening, I love cooking, I love swimming. Wearing any kind of ring, even a wedding ring, makes all these things complicated. I've been happily married for 30 years and have 3 kids, but I told my wife right away: either I cook, take care of our children and tend to our garden, or I wear a wedding ring. She chose the former  — and rightly so!
