Speaker A. In my family it was my grandmother who first got a higher education. This was right after the Second World War, when women proved their worth in the eyes of the male society and were finally allowed to gain university degrees. My grandfather was very proud of his educated wife, even though he himself had no higher education. She was very lucky to have such a husband. It was not a typical male attitude back then. Since then both men and women in my family studied in universities. I think we should really value this opportunity.

Speaker B. Nowadays going to university after school has become a default decision for most young people. I think this is so wrong. There are too many university graduates who cannot find the job that would somehow correspond to what they had studied. In my opinion it’s a waste of the parents’ money and the young peoples’ time and effort. They usually end up at entry-level position office jobs and immediately forget all they had learnt. All they need to learn for this kind of work could be learnt in less than a year in a special course.

Speaker C. I really like the idea of apprenticeship. This is how the majority of craftsmen, artisans, musicians and artists used to learn their trade in the past. Being an apprentice to a famous painter or an experienced shoemaker was very prestigious. This gave you knowledge and skill as well as status and future clients. I think this was a much more efficient kind of professional education than studying at university as we do now. It taught you not only your craft but also gave you the understanding of how to organize your business.

Speaker D. I don’t think it is possible these days to find a good job without having a university degree. This is something that society expects of you. Personally, I think it’s great! University years are the best years in a person’s life! You get away from home and parents, try being independent, find new friends, get to experience so many new things, learn so much… But what’s most important, is not even the knowledge that you gain in university, it’s your ability to think and a broader vision of life!

Speaker E. There are very few people who by the time they graduate from school know what they want to do in life. For many it is so difficult to choose the right direction. This is why I think it’s great that in American universities you don’t have to declare your major at once. In some of them you can do it even after 2 years of study. During these two years you can choose different courses, try subjects you didn’t even know existed! I have a friend who went to university thinking about learning languages and ending up becoming an anthropologist!

Speaker F. Many parents still think that to be successful in life one needs to have a higher education. I think they need to realize that life has changed and there are so many other opportunities. Going to university and then working in a big company is not always the best option. Working for yourself and not having to depend on a boss is a lot better! Look at all the young youtubers who start their channels at the age of 14 or 15 and by the time they leave school have so many followers, they can actually make enough money to be completely independent!
